Ascension
I was exhausted beyond comprehension when I slipped into bed that night. Iâd been through an overwhelming array of emotions and events, and my mind was heavily laden with the stress of anticipation. After all I had gone through, what if I didnât make it?
David had captured me. I felt him within every part of me at every moment of every day. While part of me was terrified of what might be in store, the larger portion of me was afraid I would fail and David would send me away.
The turmoil within was still raging as I fell asleep, and my dreams were filled with red lights, dark shadows, and a constant, nagging anxiety.
The next morning, the anxiety was still fresh. I had to admit that I had enjoyed everything that had happened to me thus far, and it was much better than the vapid existence Iâd led working at Trojans Bar and Grill. It wasnât what was happening to me that had be so anxious, it was the uncertainty. What was in store for me? What if David decided I wasnât good enough?
With no way to know what was expected of me that day, I took a shower, brushed my teeth, and dressed in jeans and a t-shirt before heading downstairs for breakfast.
âWell, well, well, look whoâs decided to grace us with her presence before noon,â my mother chided me. âAre you feeling alright?â
I said nothing, simply shooting her a glance that let her know I was in no mood for her crap. Surprisingly, she backed off. She poured me a glass of orange juice, which I downed quickly before pulling a slice of toast and some bacon onto my plate.
My parents were discussing vacation plans, but I was in no mood to converse. I still had the unbearable weight of my initiation on my mind.
After dinner, I washed my plate and put it into the dishwasher before heading back upstairs. My phone was vibrating, and I plucked it off my nightstand.
âHello?â I answered.
âWhere have you been?â
Sophieâs voice was higher pitched than normal, and I could hear the strain of annoyance in it.
âI was downstairs eating breakfast,â I answered. âWhatâs up?â
âWhatâs up is that Davidâs really fucking pissed,â she snapped. âWhen your phone rings, you answer it immediately. Is that understood? This may have cost you your place as a Viper Doll!â
âWhat? Because I forgot to take my phone downstairs?â I asked incredulously.
âLook here, sweet cheeks, if you want to be a Viper Doll, youâd better fucking take this seriously,â Sophie said. âThis is the opportunity of a lifetime! Do you have any idea how many girls would kill for a chance to be a Viper Doll?â
âIâm sorry, Sophie. I truly am. Iâm not used to keeping my phone with me.â
âWell, get used to it. And get dressed and be outside Chez Rouge at six-thirty sharp. Wear something really nice.â
âI donât have anything really nice,â I said. âI usually just wear jeans and t-shirts, or maybe a sweater.â
âAre you kidding? You donât have a dress or a pantsuit or anything?â Sophie asked.
